Travel Journal#22.36: Mayapur

Diary of a Traveling Sadhaka, Vol. 22, No. 36
By Krishna Kripa Das
(Week 36: September 3–9, 2026)
Mayapur
(Sent from Mayapur on September 12, 2026)

Where I Went and What I Did

For week 36 of 2026 I lived at ISKCON Mayapur, attending mangala-arati every day, and doing three hours of harinama, split over three times and places, 10 a.m. to noon, under the bridge between the Chakra Building and the Temple of the Vedic Planetarium (TOVP), 5 to 7 p.m. at that very same place, and at Srila Prabhupada’s Bhajana Kutira after 7 p.m. On Tuesday evening I did harinama with three devotees by the TOVP office for a little over an hour as the evening harinama party takes that day off.

On Janmastami I bathed in the sacred Ganges River midday with Janmastami Prabhu. Unfortunately a popped blister on my foot became infected, and I had to take antibiotics. I spent Janmastami evening at Rajapur Jagannatha temple, which Jeff suggested as it was less crowded. They had an bathing ceremony for Lord Jagannatha alone just before the midnight arati. Only a few people with brahmana initiation participated. Jeff strongly encouraged me to ask for permission. They let me but said I couldn’t wear my kurta. Jeff took this video (https://youtube.com/shorts/kEAI3nX56hI?feature=share):

On Srila Prabhupada’s Vyasa-puja Day, I listened to about three hours of Srila Prabhupada glorification in the morning. Because I missed the the morning
harinama, I chanted in evening in Srila Prabhupada’s Bhajan Kutir to complete my quota of three hours.

I share quotes from Srila Prabhupada’s Srimad-Bhagavatam, as well as from four lectures of his. I share quotes from Litany for the Gone and Summer Marathon by Satsvarupa Dasa Goswami and notes on classes by Radhika Nagara and Advaita Acharya Prabhus. I share notes on Vyasa-puja offerings made by Mayapur devotees.

Thanks to Bhakta Jeff Blair for facilitating my visit to Mayapur in different ways. Thanks to Mayapur Community Hospital for the free medical service for treating my foot infection and to the Mayapur Brahmacari Council for four days free accommodation in the Senior Brahmacari Ashram. Thanks to Sri Govinda Bhasya Prabhu and his friend from South India and Gaura Nama Prabhu for supporting my Tuesday evening harinama. Thanks to Gaura Nama Prabhu for the videos of that harinama. Thanks to Janmastami Prabhu for the lunch at his place and the garland from the sakhis. Thanks to Ranchor Prabhu for the garland from Gaura Nitai at the Prabhupada Bhajan Kutir. Thanks to Sarvabhauma Prabhu for the veggie burger and to Jaya Gaurasundara for the dosa for breakfast on dvadasi.

Insights

Srila Prabhupada:

From Srimad-Bhagavatam 3.21.51, purport:

The Supreme Lord is always worshipable, regardless of whether one is a brahmana, a ksatriya or a sudra. As the representative of the Supreme Lord, the king deserved respectful obeisances from everyone.”

From Srimad-Bhagavatam 3.22.5, purport:

it is actually a fact that if one meets a saintly person completely engaged in transcendental duties and achieves his favor, then one's life mission becomes complete. What is not possible to achieve in thousands of lives can be achieved in one moment if there is an opportunity to meet a saintly person. It is therefore enjoined in Vedic literature that one should always try to associate with saintly persons and try to disassociate oneself from the common man, because by one word of a saintly person one can be liberated from material entanglement. A saintly person has the power, because of his spiritual advancement, to give immediate liberation to the conditioned soul.”

From Srimad-Bhagavatam 3.22.7, purport:

One person is advised to act in Krishna consciousness by working in the Deities' room, another is advised to act in Krishna consciousness by performing editorial work, another is advised to do preaching work, and another is advised to carry out Krishna consciousness in the cooking department. There are different departments of activity in Krishna consciousness, and a spiritual master, knowing the particular ability of a particular man, trains him in such a way that by his tendency to act he becomes perfect. Bhagavad-gita makes it clear that one can attain the highest perfection of spiritual life simply by offering service according to his ability, just as Arjuna served Krishna by his ability in the military art. Arjuna offered his service fully as a military man, and he became perfect. Similarly, an artist can attain perfection simply by performing artistic work under the direction of the spiritual master. If one is a literary man, he can write articles and poetry for the service of the Lord under the direction of the spiritual master. One has to receive the message of the spiritual master regarding how to act in one’s capacity, for the spiritual master is expert in giving such instructions.”

From a lecture on Janmastami in London on August 21, 1973:

Just like the father wants to see his son is well-situated and happy; similarly, Krishna also wants to see every one of us happy and well-situated. Therefore He comes sometimes. Yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati [Bg 4.7]. This is the purpose of Krishna’s advent.”

From a lecture on Vyasa-puja in London on August 22, 1973:

When Krishna sees that a living entity is very anxious to understand Him or to revive his Krishna consciousness, then Krishna gives him all opportunity, especially by manifesting Himself as the spiritual master. Antar bahih. The spiritual master is therefore Krishna’s manifestation, Krishna’s mercy manifestation to help a person to develop his Krishna consciousness. From within He's helping. Therefore He’s called caitya-guru, and from without, He sends His representative to help how to become advanced in Krishna consciousness. Therefore, to advance in Krishna consciousness we require two kinds of help—one from Krishna and another from the spiritual master.”

So everyone has got duty in Krishna consciousness, and this duty is taught by Krishna and the spiritual master.”

Bhaktivinoda Thakura wanted that European and American people may understand the philosophy of Caitanya cult and take part in it. That was his desire.

My Guru Maharaja, His Divine Grace Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Prabhupada, he also attempted to send his disciples to preach Caitanya cult in the Western world.”

The message was there when I was twenty-five years old, but I began at the age of seventy years. But I did not forget the message. Otherwise, how could I do? That was, that is a fact. I was simply finding out the opportunity how to do it.”

So this Vyasa-puja ceremony means to offer our thanks to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, because He is the original guru.”

We come to this Krishna consciousness understanding through this long parampara, similarly, in the Vyasa-puja ceremony, whatever respect, honor and presentation you give, that goes to Krishna through that parampara system, from down. As it is received through the parampara system, so similarly, your offerings also goes through this parampara system to the Supreme. The connection.”

And our business is just to present whatever we have heard. This is very important point. And because we do not speculate mentally, just like so many svamis comes from India, they make their own presentation by speculation. So whatever little success I have got, it is due to this process, that I do not present anything which is created by me. That is the secret of success. All these rascals, I say, declaring this. All these rascals come, they manufacture. A spiritual thing cannot be manufactured—as God cannot be manufactured. God is always God, and the words of God is also God. If we present as it is, then it will be effective.”

From a bona fide spiritual master you receive knowledge, because he will present as he has received from his spiritual master. He'll not adulterate or manufacture something. That is the bona fide spiritual master. And that is very easy. To become spiritual master is not very difficult thing. You’ll have to become spiritual master. You, all my disciples, everyone should become spiritual master. It is not difficult.”

if you simply present whatever you have heard from your spiritual master, it is very easy. If you want to become overintelligent, to present something, to interpret something, whatever over you have heard from your spiritual master you can make some further addition, alteration, then you’ll spoil whole thing. Then you’ll spoil whole thing. Don’t make addition or alteration. Simply present as it is.”

One may be rascal number one from material estimation, but if he simply strictly follows whatever is said by Caitanya Mahaprabhu or His representative spiritual master, then he becomes a guru.”

And if you cannot do anything, simply come and offer your obeisances: ‘My dear Lord Krishna, I am so poor, so unfortunate, I cannot do all these things, but I offer my humble obeisances unto Your lotus feet.’ That much also. If you do this, you become spiritual master.”

So if you simply preach this cult, ‘My dear friend, my dear brother, you surrender to Krishna,’ you become spiritual master. You become spiritual master.”

So I hope that all of you, men, women, boys and girls, become spiritual master and follow this principle. Spiritual master—simply, sincerely, follow the principles and speak to the general public. Then Krishna immediately becomes your favorite. Krishna does not become your favorite; you become Krishna’s favorite.”

From a lecture on Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.9.48 in Mayapur on June 14, 1973:

So people are misled in this way. They undergo hardship for some temporary gain, which is condemned. Sastra says that if you take hardship, if you go..., undergo tapasya, it must be for realization of God. Tapo divyam. That will give you permanent happiness. And if you accept hardship for anything material, it may give you temporary, so-called happiness, but with the end of your body, everything will be finished.”

We live together. There may be some inconvenience. You are brought up in a different standard in Europe and America, and in India it may be difficult because you haven't got all the facilities. But you learn tolerance; execute Krishna consciousness. That should be our business.”

From a lecture on Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.9.49 in Mayapur on June 15, 1973:

The whole system of human civilization is guide the people to become God conscious. This is the Vedic civilization. Not to make them dog conscious, cat conscious, animal conscious. No.”

And wherefrom this dharma comes? It comes from Bhagavan, God. He gives these dharmas. And the king, the spiritual master, being representative of God, it is their duty how to guide people to develop that God consciousness. This is called human civilization, dharmena.

Just like a medical practitioner: when he passes his examination in the medical college, that is his quality. Or a lawyer, when he passes his examination in the university, that is his quality. But simply by passing the examination, if he sits down at home, then he cannot be called a medical practitioner. He must work as a medical man. . . . Not simply acquiring the quality, but he must work as a brahmana. Then he will be accepted as a brahmana.

It is the duty of the state to see whether you are qualified as a brahmana. "You are claiming as brahmana. Whether you are actually qualified as a brahmana? Whether you are working as a brahmana?" It is the state’s duty to see. It is the king’s duty. He may not misguide others.”

Satsvarupa Dasa Goswami:

From A Litany for the Gone:

It is my happiness as a genuine member of the sampradaya—specifically the disciple of His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada—to see more devotees coming forward even after his disappearance. This is my happiness. Glad I can fulfill the post or role of via medium to help them.”

Finally, I ask those devotees whose names I have mentioned to please excuse me. I did not mention your names out of malice, but with the hope that by remembering the history, even fragments of the history, it might awaken again the ideals and convictions that we all held at the time of your acceptance of vows. As long as we have the human form of life, we have time to rectify ourselves. Åšrila Prabhupada writes in one purport that ideally, Krishna consciousness should be executed from the very beginning of life, but he reassures us that even a late starter can make full progress. Real progress begins whenever we sense the urgency for Krishna consciousness. It’s never too late to come back.”

From Summer Marathon:

Seek to find myself as pure self, eternal servant of the Lord. As Åšrila Prabhupada writes (and I want to repeat it), the devotee aspires to gain his eternal association with Krishna in one of the five transcendental rasas. That’s it.”

We too say that weeding out is not a sufficient way to remove weeds. They have to be fried in their seed stage, otherwise, cut-down fields will rise again. Kecit kevalaya bhaktya—devotional service does the job. Ultimately, it’s not by my introspection or heroic acts to undeceive myself. By srnvatam sva-kathah krṣṇah, hearing about Krishna, the Lord who is in my heart, cleanses desire for material things and brings me to pure taste in hearing of His acts, His form, name, etc.”

So I will weed out wrongs. I’ll have to cry sometimes, and if at a particular moment when it’s time to write I’m filled with complaint … I may say, “Ouch!” But I prefer to say, “Gauranga!”

True happiness is far away. Unique self is known by revelation. The Supreme makes you happy. When you serve Him, you can know a drop of His sac-cid-ananda nature. No other process can do it, not introspection or speculation.”

You will lose taste for all things of this world in the proportion that you gain serious attraction to the Lord.”

Every place needs Krishna consciousness, and every devotee can be a giver, a preacher.”

My offering, if I can concentrate and remember it, is to record what’s happening and share it as nectar, as instruction. Everyone is running through life, me too, but some of us want to record the human and spiritual essence of the experience. A poet senses the secret. Preserves it. This may be vain, another way of taking. But it can be giving too, if you do it right.”

Find truth naturally in Bhagavad-gita. This morning I felt sweetness in coming close to Krishna in the Gita.

One woman in Western dress asked, ‘Why does Krishna sometimes respond to our difficulties with relief only after a long time?’ I said, ‘He is not slow or neglectful. It is we who are slow to see Him acting in our favor, which He may do in many ways. Have faith whatever He does, it’s for our own good.’”

Åšrila Prabhupada presented Krishna consciousness sternly but with great optimism in the ability of the average devotee to attain the pure state. We just have to follow the mahajanas. The difficulty becomes easy, by Lord Caitanya’s grace. That’s a significant difference between Krishna consciousness and the Jewish and Christian teachers, K[otzger] and K[ierkegaard]. We mostly see K and K as struggling and struggling. The devotee is dancing in kirtana.

Sure, there are dark and cynical things in our hearts. But it’s nothing a good kirtana, prasada, and Bhagavatam class can’t drive out.”

The questions afterwards were also excellent. One of them pushed me to describe further how Prabhupada combined the qualities of humility and yet great confidence. For an answer, I turned to Prabhupada’s poem which he wrote at sea. He described himself as the via medium. Through him the great confidence surged, the victory that would occur on the order of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Ṭhakura. And yet Prabhupada himself felt unqualified. I quoted Krishnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami who said that as one has love of God, the first symptom is that he feels he has none. Then a young man with stumbling English asked an excellent question. He said, ‘What’s the difference between a neophyte devotee who has no love of God, thinks that he has no love of God, and the advanced devotee who thinks that way?’ I said that even in the neophyte stage, that spiritual poverty is a jewel and that he can increase it. It’s better than having no love of God and thinking that you do have love of God.”

Radhika Nagara Prabhu:

From a class on Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.13.44 in Mayapur on September 3, 2026:

Krishna arranged this pastime to show that even Lord Brahma can become bewildered. If Brahma can be bewildered, what to speak of us?

The first verse of the Bhagavatam tells that the demigods are bewildered by Krishna.

These pastimes are not ordinary. We can only understand these pastimes if we surrender to Krishna.

In the material world we have the false hope that things will improve.

We must come to understand that we are controlled by maya, and we cannot escape without surrendering to Krishna.

Before the pastime, Brahma was thinking that he could test Krishna. Afterwards he realized that he was completely dependent on Krishna.

Srila Prabhupada explained that he could not fall into maya because he was always praying to Krishna that he might not fall into maya.

We should choose actions that reduce our implication in the material energy and increase our surrender to the will of the Lord. We should choose an action that will be pleasing to the Lord.

The person in Krishna consciousness understands there is a higher plan behind everything.

I am surrendering to You. From this day I am Yours.”

We want to become bewildered by the beauty of Krishna.

The fulfillment comes when the soul comes in touch with Krishna directly.

The happiness we enjoy engaging in devotional in this world is insignificant compared to the happiness in the spiritual world.

By becoming purified by challenges in our spiritual life, we experience some revelation from Krishna.

Maya creeps in. She gets you by the neck, and you do not even know it.

Q: How do I know if I am depending on Krishna?

A: The association of Vaishnavas who have a broader perspective on our life can help us understand. If we have a taste in our devotional service and if we are able to be enthusiastic, determined, and patient, those are good signs.

Acarya Acharya Prabhu:

From a class on Srimad-Bhagavatam 3.28.14 in Mayapur on September 9, 2026:

If all the kinds of fuel available on this earth, oil, coal, gas, etc., were used to fuel the sun, the scientists say it would be illuminated for just six hours. Where therefore does the sun, which has been shining for millenia, get its energy? The Vedas say it comes from the brahmajyoti, which is the effulgence of the Supreme Lord.

For many devotees, just to see the Lord is their goal. After seeing the Lord, everything else is less attractive.

If we work for the Lord, automatically He will give darsana (audience).

Krishna is not just standing like Vishnu. He is playing the flute. He herding the surabhi cows. The devotees want to assist the Lord in His pastimes.

Notes on Prabhupada Vyasa Puja Offerings in Mayapur

Gauranga Prema Swami Maharaja (Bengali, initiating guru and nama-hatta preacher):

Offers brief biography of Srila Prabhupada.

I started Krishna consciousness in 1979 and did nama-hatta preaching, showing people how they can do Krishna consciousness at home, and now thousands of people are practicing Krishna consciousness in rural Bengal.

Vasusrestha Prabhu, disciple of Srila Prabhupada:

Prabhupada single-handledly spread the holy name all over the world.

In the botantical gardens in Melbroune, Srila Prabhupada asked, “What is that tree?”

A devotee said, “I think it is a ??? tree.”

Srila Prabhupada said, “You are speculating. Look at the sign below the tree.”

The devotee said, “It is a euculyptus tree.”

Srila Prabhupada said, “Don’t speculate!”

BSST told him to distribute books.

He is the yuga-acarya.

Each year we realize more of his glories.

Stories of him are refreshing to hear and share.

Hari Sauri Prabhu:

Srila Prabhupada was probably the most significant personality to appear in the last 500 years.

All the realizations of the great goswamis, Bhaktivinoda Thakura, and Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura are funneled through Srila Prabhupada.

No one has done more for the sankirtana movement than Srila Prabhupada.

The seeds of the sankirtana movement were distributed during the time of Lord Caitanya.

Thus we should be grateful to Srila Prabhupada for bringing the sankirtana movement to the lowest people.

There is a video of Mukunda Goswami going back to Bowery. The Bowery was famous as the worst place in New York. Prabhupada was so compassionate to start there.

Srila Prabhupada’s real resource was the bhakti he had in his heart. Thus he could transform people’s lives in a way that they could never imagine.

He once summarized Krishna consciousness as “Chant, dance, take prasadam, and go home, back to Godhead.”

No one did more for the movement of Lord Caitanya than Srila Prabhupada.

We pray for his mercy and the touch of his lotus feet.

Sarvabhauma Prabhu:

morning dew

evengelic angel

illusion’s toll

only hope

full of brace

impersonal calamity is moved.

Adds two verses. Ask him.

I love Srila Prabhupada.

I love ISKCON.

ISKCON is for me where there is kirtan.

Let’s have short kirtan.

[Sarvabhauma Prabhu then had Hare Krishna kirtan for the rest of his allotted time.]

Co-director of ISKCON Mayapur with Subheksana Prabhu, Braja Vilasa Prabhu:

We pray that Jayapataka Swami and Ambarisa Prabhu fully recover and return to Mayapur.

We want a six month celebration of the TOVP from November 2027 to April 2027.

The main temple will be completed by December 2026.

The domes will be completed by October 2026.

The facade will be completed by December to mid-2027.

The most beautiful vyasasana in the whole creation, for our father and our grandfather, who has given us everything, we’ll have by the end of 2026.

People are working tirelessly for both TOVP and Mayapur development.

We are seeing TOVP is manifesting by the cooperation you asked us to have to glorify you for what you have given to us, the opportunity to do some seva [service].

Gunesvara Prabhu:

In Padma Purana, Bhakti Devi says, “Someone will take me to far off places all over the world to benefit people.”

You prayed and prayed because the task was so difficult. You offered that prayer in Boston. You would sometimes see when the next ship would go back to India, but you stayed.

Srila Prabhupada said, “It is my duty to develop your attachment for me.”

There is nothing higher than to be attached to your lotus feet and your words.

Thank you for this Hare Krishna life and to have the association of devotees who love you so much.

Bhakti Arjava Goswami Maharaja:

I was visiting the countries in South America for the last three years. There are devotees there who are very eager to hear the philosophy in your books. They are especially interested relationships and the idea we can develop relationship with Krishna.

I spoke to Christian priests in Paraguay. They were forcefully presenting their ideas in the beginning. I showed them your books and used your arguments. After our discussion, they understood there is no difference between Christianity and Vaishnavism and other religions because the aim is the same. Thus I saw the power of your books and your preaching. It was impressive to see what can happen when people keep their minds open. Thanks for that experience, and help us understand how we can cooperate on the path of bhakti.

Jayapataka Swami:

I am always amazed to read your Jaladuta Diary and hear how you were challenged by different illnesses. I feel more and more indebted to you when I read it. You have done so much for us. We should finish up our business and go back to Godhead to show our gratitude.

We should not think how we cannot do something but how we can do that thing.

You encourged all to study the sastras and set up courses and exams, but we have not made so much progress and must be more determined. You wanted that those who passed the Bhaktivedanta exam could become gurus.

Although we had some idea of God in the West, you saved us from addiction to sinful activities.

Vrajavinoda Prabhu:

We are trying to spend Radha Madhava’s money responsibly and report as the government required and as you advised.

Thanks for allowing me to serve in Mayapur and be close to Pancatattva.

You have put your love for the Lord in your purports, lectures and kirtanas just like Mahaprabhu put His love into the Padma River.

In a lecture, you said try to capture Krishna. If you cannot capture Krishna, choose Krishna instead of maya. If you cannot always choose Krishna instead of maya, at least come back to Krishna.

We hope to add a unit to the hospital for devotees coming here to leave their bodies. Also a proper place to burn their bodies of those who die in Mayapur we plan to make.

Janmastami Prabhu:

All glories to you empowered service.

Caitanya said, “Later my commander-in-chief will come and spread the holy name all over the world.”

I am extremely grateful how you transformed my life and millions of others.

You say when the guru leaves disorder arises, and the sincere disciples tries to restore the order.

I have tried to do this by reestablishing book distribution in the USA. I received so much bliss from you and Krishna for doing this. We went from 5 to 85 distributors in the USA.

In ten years, I developed the Mayapur Institute. Jayapataka Swami told me to do that, but said I should commit to at least 5 years. Later I realized there were so many challenges, and that is why Jayapataka Swami said that.

The next segment of my life, I tried to help devotees see your place in their lives and how they can reciprocate with you. I created a course. Ask him.

Please continue to shower your mercy.

Hrimati Devi Dasi:

I was at the Hyderabad farm. Prabhupada visited for two weeks. We had no vyasasana for Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, so Prabhupada advised us to decorate his vyasasana and to put his guru’s photo on it.

Vyasa-puja is not just a ceremony. It means accepting the guru parampara line of teachers.

Srila Prabhupada said of his late start, “Better late than never.”

When I saw the picture of Govinda I learned the Lord who is kind to the cows is my Lord.

Your senses are always engaged in the service in the Lord of the cows.

You sowed devotional seeds in our hearts. It is our duty to water them.

I long to be reunited with you in the abode of the Lord of the cows.

Agriculture and cow protection help us become sinless and attracted to devotional service.

Where would I be without you?

Somehow or other I am trying to serve you by serving the cows.

One cannot become spiritually advanced without acquiring the brahminical qualifications and giving protection to cows.” (SB 6.18.52)

Jananivasa Prabhu:

Prabhupada explained that Krishna consciousness is the original consciousness of the living being and we should attain it.

We are to come under the internal potency of the Lord, and that is Radharani.

Nanda Krishna Prabhu:

Many people come to this line hearing the purports of Srimad-Bhagavatam.

You are founder-acarya; you lead all the people.

Birth after birth I want the association of pure devotees like your disciples.

Gaudiya Math Sannyasi:

He is not an ordinary man but has come from the lotus feet of Radha Krishna.

Hearing from his guru, he spread Krishna consciousness all over the world. Now everyone is chanting Hare Krishna . . .

The holy name of the Lord Hari is the only way to the ultimate goal of life.

Another Gaudiya Math Sannyasi, disciple of Keshava Maharaja:

When I sent news of our Keshava Maharaja’s disappearance to Bhaktivedanta Swami, he said he and the eighteen members of ISKCON at that time observed the event.

He brought Lord Jagannatha all over the world.

Gaura Hari?:

When Prabhupada heard me singing he asked Bhavananda to get me. When I came, you said, “Your service to Radha Madhava is to always do kirtan for them.”

Subhaga Swami:

We are trying to see in many parts of world that book distribution is going on. We see among the students, especially in India, a lot of interest in your books

-----

Krishna consciousness is actually for everyone, and thus the devotees are willing to try to interest anyone in attaining it. They follow the mood of the Panca-tattva, whose activities are described in this verse of Sri Caitanya-caritamrita:

patrapatra-vicara nahi, nahi sthanasthana

yei yanha paya, tanha kare prema-dana

In distributing love of Godhead, Caitanya Mahaprabhu and His associates did not consider who was a fit candidate and who was not, nor where such distribution should or should not take place. They made no conditions. Wherever they got the opportunity, the members of the Pañca-tattva distributed love of Godhead.” ( Sri Caitanya-caritamrita, Adi 7.23)
