East German Festival Programs

My reason to go to Leipzig was to take part in a couple of outreach events, Cottbus Open, and a harinama at festival in Dresden Neustadt (New City), a place of alternative people. Both were during the same weekend, so we camped out at a Cottbus city park and did a day trip to Dresden Neustadt for a Saturday afternoon harinama. It was the fourth year the Leipzig devotees set up a camp at Cottbus Open, a festival with vendors and a few stages with bands.

We did a harinama around town before the festival got going. At the festival, devotees distributed mango lassi, yogi tea, pakoras and chutney, sweet balls, rice with vegetables, a few other things.

In their yurt, they had Deities of Jagannatha, Baladeva, and Subhadra, Gaura-Nitai, Giri-Govardhan, and a picture of Srila Prabhupada and Pralhada-Nrsimha. They had bhajanas amplified with a good sound system with all the instruments and voices separately microphoned and mixed together. They distributed food till 11:00 p.m. and chanted till 1:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, but on Sunday just till 7:00 p.m., when a thunderstorm curtailed the event.

Throughout the evening many people came and listened, some participating in their own ways.

The two ladies on Prithu Prabhu's right
delighted in singing and clapping along.

In addition, the devotees had a stage with a drama and a devotee playing songs with spiritual lyrics on a guitar.

The drama was a humorous spoof on Darwin and his theory of evolution, and involved a spider who explained and demonstrated, both to Darwin and the audience, the difficulties entailed in evolving from an insect who chased its prey to one who constructed and utilized a web for the purpose. It also starred God, who appeared at the end and briefly described a little about his creation. Hrdaya Gauranga Prabhu from Berlin, the script writer who starred as the spider, hopes to visit Bhakti Marg Swami in Canada, and develop his dramatic talent while assisting him there.

Leipzig temple president, Sad-bhuja Prabhu and head pujari, Ramananda Gopala Prabhu, each told me how they find each year the residents are more comfortable with the devotees presence there, more spiritual food is distributed, and more people ask questions. According to Ramananda Gopala, they especially want to hear from the individual devotees how they became interested in Krishna consciousness. Prithu Prabhu said of the event, that he felt Srila Prabhupada was pleased to see the devotees’ presentation there. As we have no temple with regular programs in Cottbus, next month the devotees will do a follow up program for those who have to have some interest.

The devotees from Leipzig, Berlin, and nearby areas cooperated nicely together. The prasadam for devotees was pretty good, except once we had halava alone for our second meal, not ideal for old timers like me. The new bhaktas were really surrendered to doing the needful to help out. Gobhati and Mohini Prabhus, from Jena, are a nice bhajana couple, expertly playing the instruments and singing together.

The Dresden Neustadt harinama was nice with about fifteen devotees. I distributed invitations the whole time, perhaps three or four hours, and many people took them. Certainly it was a place of alternative dress and hair styles. Some intersections had bands playing that drowned out our party, and others had no competition.

We did harinama in the center of some of these intersections for some time before moving on. A few people danced with us. Devotees do monthly programs in Dresden.

I like riding the trains in Europe. Since usually I am doing outreach in the cities, the train rides give me a chance to see the beauty of God’s creation. I can have my warmth, my comfortable seat, my computer, and my view of nature, all at once.

These mountains in Austria are awesome, with the rushing streams in the valleys beside them, waterfalls decorating their sides, and with misty clouds passing by their sides and summits. Green farm land is on their lower slopes. Europe is so very green. Man is always trying to conquer nature and is proud of his successes, but the greatness of the mountains makes man seem small indeed.

Slovenian Eco Caravan Padayatra

This year, I took a break from attending the entire Polish festival tour, seeing that they have an abundance of devotees on harinamas there, and my role was relatively minor. Instead I decided to investigate other harinama opportunities in Europe. I recalled reading about the Slovenian Eco Caravan padayatra in a 2003 BTG article and Lokanath Swami, who was coming to its beginning, encouraged me to attend.

Padayatra plays an important role in our ISKCON outreach because it contacts people who would not otherwise have a chance to meet the devotees. Such people would either have no clue about Hare Krishna or just some rumors or speculation, mostly erroneous.

Haridas, the Padayatra horse, his cart, and his caretaker.

Hare Krishna Dasa from Italy can play accordion and sing for 5 hours with great devotion.
Organizer Bharata Dasa plays on mrdanga, and I dance behind.

When the people meet the padayatra they see a lot of colorful, friendly people singing and dancing, and sharing food and books.

Most everyone is smiling to see us, and almost all take prasadam. On good days, the devotees distribute 200 books, 1000 pieces of prasadam, chant for six hours, and travel an average of twelve kilometers or about eight miles. They give everyone a brochure, written in Slovenian, German, and English, which describes how the planetary crisis we are facing is largely an effect of bad karma and it can be changed by reconnecting with the supreme conscious person through devotional practices such as the chanting mantras like the Hare Krishna mantra which is especially powerful being composed of names of God and when chanted aloud by a group. The brochure also mentions cultural programs they do for four evenings at the some of the towns they pass through during their sixteen-day trek.

The padayatris do not just go down the main streets of the towns, but, to increase the number of people they meet, they go along many side streets, and people often smile and wave from their apartment windows. The devotees on the team are very hardworking, dedicated, and organized, and it is impressive to see their presentation. On the first day, we had about fifty devotees, but that reduced to twenty or thirty, for the succeeding days.

For me, being accustomed to going on the Polish summer festival harinamas, it was quite a different experience. They harinama were six hours instead of three hours, and so really tested the limitations of my material body. It was also austere living in a different school each night, instead of the same one, some with limited facilities. Also fewer people were contacted since the Polish festival devotees are known to distribute 7,000 invitations in just three hours, and so the outreach of the padayatra seemed a bit small time in comparison.

Some of the towns were very small,
as you can see from the signs!

In reality, the Slovenian Padayatra is no less important since for many of the people, it will be the only chance this life to contact the devotees, and so for those souls residing in rural Slovenia, its existence has all the importance of the world.

Also the Slovenian padayatra distributes quite a large quantity of books, comparing favorably even to their Christmastime Prabhupada Marathon, a very great accomplishment.

Despite walking and singing for five or six hours and setting up and breaking down their camp at a different school each day, the devotees had an hour and twenty minute morning program including mangala-arati, the Nrsimha prayers, tulasi-puja, greeting of the Deities, guru-puja, and a twenty-five minute Srimad-Bhagavatam class!

One day I gave the Bhagavatam class which was on Rsabhadeva’s teachings. The verse described that association with those lusty after the opposite sex is the path of degradation. To emphasize the point, I quoted a verse by Lord Krishna to his friend Uddhava which says that association of the opposite sex and persons addicted to enjoying the opposite sex is greatest cause of bondage and misery. Thus it was very amusing to me that on that very day on padayatra, as we passed through a underpass, I saw the following graffiti scrawled on the wall:

“I’m tragically attracted to you!”

We are fortunate that we can cultivate attraction to Krishna and be spared the tragedy resulting from mundane attachments. And not only that, we can help to protect others from being victimized in this way as well, by giving them a higher taste of spiritual pleasure.

Seeing the padayatra reminds me of Lord Caitanya’s desire that His holy name be chanted in every town and village of this world. Many such padayatras taking place in all the countries of the world could gradually make this prediction come to pass. Why not think of attending one near you? And if there is not one in your country, why not think of organizing one? It could start small and grow, as interest increases and more people come forward to contribute and participate.

Book Distribution Story

The Slovenian devotees explained that during the Prabhupada marathon one year, a party of book distributors decided to distribute books in the same place that they did the padayatra earlier that summer. One might think that the people there would be less receptive because they are already bought books before and that it would be better to go to a new place, where people did not already have them. However, the devotees found that because the people so much liked the padayatra, with its prasadam, devotees, and books, they bought more books than the average person, and thus that party that distributed to the padayatra towns won the marathon.

Insights from Lectures, Talks, and Readings

Lokanath Swami during the beginning of the Slovenian Eco Caravan Padayatra:

After our eighteen-month long original padayatra reached Mayapur for the 500th anniversary of Lord Caitanya’s birth, Lokanath Swami eagerly told Hridayananda Dasa Goswami that he wanted to continue for ten years, till Srila Prabhupada’s centennial. Instead of being impressed, Hridayananda Maharaja said, “Why not keep it going for 9,500 more years? [till the end of the golden age of Lord Caitanya.]”

The Slovenian padayatra visits different towns in that country each year. Lokanath Swami suggested that they make a plan to go to every single one.

When you are a little sick you go to the doctor, but when you are too much sick the doctor goes to you. The people are too much sick, so we are going around to the people with the holy name, the medicine for this age.

We may think that we are bringing the Deities of Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityananda on padayatra, but in reality Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityananda are bringing us on padayatra.

One time when Maharaja Prataparudra looking at the Deity of Jagannatha, in place of Lord Jagannatha, he saw Lord Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He rubbed his eyes, confused by his vision. He then twice asked the pujari what he saw, and the pujari replied each time that he saw Lord Jagannatha as usual. So in this way, Maharaja Prataparudra saw Caitanya, and the pujari saw Lord Jagannatha, and therefore it is said, “He who is Krishna, is also Gaura and Lord Jagannatha.”

Lokanath Swami reminds us that after offering obeisances to the Deity, we should stand before Him and offer prayers.

When Lord Caitanya saw Maharaja Prataparudra sweeping the street in front of Lord Jagannatha, He was impressed. The king could have easily hired so many sweepers to do that service, but instead, he performed the service for Lord Jagannatha personally.

Lord Jagannatha’s chariot does not move as a result of the pullers of the ropes, but according to the will of Lord Jagannatha.

Lord Jagannatha’s eyes are wide open as he was amazed to hear of Rohini tell of the symptoms of the traumatic feelings of separation from Him that His friends from Vrndavana experienced as a result of His leaving them. Thus Lord Jagannatha is in the mood of “Where are my devotees?” “How are they doing?” Lord Caitanya is looking for Krishna, and Krishna, as Lord Jagannatha, is looking for His devotees. Thus They are a great combination.

The Hare Krishna mantra is a Radha Krishna mantra. When we chant Krishna, Radha is pleased, and when we chant Hare, addressing Radha, Krishna is pleased, and it goes on like that as we continue chanting the mantra.

The Lord’s teachings are good for all times. By hearing even one instruction, one can perfect his life.

The man eats. The hog eats. The hog is not enjoying less. The man must work so hard for this same insignificant pleasure. Lord Rsabhadeva advises one think about this, but the popular mantra today is “just do it.” Don’t think about it.

People now cannot discriminate between the human life’s goal and the animal life’s goal. They have made the goals the same.

People are undergoing inconvenience or austerity, but it is not divine.

If you are looking for happiness, be prepared to suffer, for they are part of the same package.

In this age, just to stay together is a big austerity.

Without going out to the people they have just some vague idea of what is Hare Krishna.

Lokanath Swami describes the austerities of the Vraja Mandala parikrama and their result in the slogan, “From blisters to bliss.”

Kadamba Kanana Swami:

In Brhad-Bhagavatamrita there was a debate in Brahmaloka among the personified scriptures over whether mantras alone can give liberation, and the agamas won the debate by showing conclusively that mantras about the Supreme Personality of Godhead can give liberation. However, some confidential literatures left the assembly during the debate, displeased with the focus on liberation, and when Brahma invited them to return after the debate, they expressed that mantras glorifying the Lord do not only bring liberation but pure devotional service and love of God.

Srila Prabhupada made the following Srimad-Bhagavatam verse, which he quotes in its Preface, his life’s mission: “On the other hand, that literature which is full of descriptions of the transcendental glories of the name, fame, forms, pastimes, etc., of the unlimited Supreme Lord is a different creation, full of transcendental words directed toward bringing about a revolution in the impious lives of this world's misdirected civilization. Such transcendental literatures, even though imperfectly composed, are heard, sung and accepted by purified men who are thoroughly honest.” (SB 1.5.12)

In the verse, “By regular attendance in classes on the Bhagavatam and by rendering of service to the pure devotee, all that is troublesome to the heart is almost completely destroyed, and loving service unto the Personality of Godhead, who is praised with transcendental songs, is established as an irrevocable fact”, Srila Prabhupada explained the word “almost” in different ways. Once he said that we tend to become proud of our scholarship and thus chanting “Hare Krishna,” which reduces pride, is required in addition to hearing Srimad-Bhagavatam. We cannot be proud of our chanting, since it is only by the mercy of the holy name that His glory is revealed, not our personal endeavor.

Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura in The Bhagavata and Its Ethics made the point that most people imprison knowledge in their minds as a magistrate imprisons a criminal, but it is better that the knowledge is lived and the acquired realizations are shared. The scripture declares the truth is within the heart of the realized soul.

Srila Prabhupada is unique in an entire day of Brahma for his great distribution of Krishna consciousness from East to West. Krishna appears only once in a day of Brahma and Lord Caitanya appears just once after Him. And this spreading of the teachings of Lord Caitanya all over the world, was done once, and Lord Caitanya selected Srila Prabhupada to do that service, and he did it. Therefore Srila Prabhupada is unique in an entire day of Brahma. There are other groups split off from ISKCON and others split off from the Gaudiya Math, but they all are resting on what Srila Prabhupada has done.

Once Srila Prabhupada said, “Now it is too late to stop this movement.” Like a contagious disease, at a certain point it is too late to stop.

In Caitanya Bhagavata it is described that many brahmanas wanted to offer lunch to Lord Caitanya, however the Lord said that He would only eat with a lakh-pati, a master of one hundred thousand. The brahmanas were dismayed thinking he meant one who had one hundred thousand rupees, but the Lord explained he meant one who daily chanted one hundred thousands names of the Lord or sixty-four rounds. This is where the idea of daily chanting sixty-four rounds came from.

Srila Prabhupada promised that if we chant sixteen rounds and follow the four regulative principles we can go back to Godhead in one life. Some tell their followers they need only chant four rounds, but the question is “Can those gurus guarantee their followers will go back to Godhead?”

We must be careful about adding too many new rules and regulations and making the process too difficult for people to follow and thus doing a great disservice to Srila Prabhupada.

Our mission in relation to the other groups of Vaisnavas is to rise above over the platform of competition. There will not be a unity of Vaishnavas until we can all respect each other’s service.

KKS Q&A:

Q: Is Narada a person existing in one universe or a position?

A: He is a person, not a position, but he can expand himself into other universes also.

Q: What evidence is there about this idea of expansion?

A: In Vaikuntha, the associates of Narayana, can manifest additional forms to enhance their service, while maintaining their own forms as well. This is described in Brhad-Bhagavatamrita.

There are two aspects to chanting:

1) We are making an offering to Krishna.

2) We are taking darsana of Krishna in the form of sound.

It is a meditation. Prabodhananda Saravati asks Krishna when He will appear in his meditation.

When the devotee falls down, Krishna cries even more than the devotee does.

The difference between bhava and prema, is that bhava is like a single ray and prema is like the sun. There are no obstacles in prema, but there are some miseries in bhava.

Prithu Prabhu:

It was a blessing to have Prithu Prabhu at the Cottbus Open assisting the Leipzig and Berlin devotees at the festival in a city park. He is a pioneer of preaching at gatherings, purchasing his first yurt in 1981. It was twice the size of the one we had, and he would have eighty or a hundred people chanting and dancing inside. He would go to Rainbow Gatherings around America and sometimes as many ten people would join the Krishna movement on the strength of his presentation.

He specializes in real life stories that show the reality of karma in action, and told the devotees a couple.

He tells the story of his father, a devout theist, and his father’s childhood friend, an atheist. As a child Prithu’s father gave his friend a sandwich. His friend not wanting it, threw it away. Prithu’s father indicated that what we are given to sustain ourselves is a gift from God and should be respected, but his friend retorted, “I don’t believe in God.” Many years later, they were united again, this time in a German concentration camp, where they were both tortured, Prithu’s father most brutally. When the British officers liberated the camp, a doctor examined them, and noted that Prithu’s father’s friend was so undernourished that he would die, lamenting that had he had just one more slice of bread, he would have survived. The dying friend spoke to Prithu’s father with urgency, “Remember that time I threw the sandwich away?” Prithu’s father nodded, and his friend collapsed into his bed, never to stir again.

Once Prithu Prabhu was encouraging a young man to practice Krishna consciousness, but his family presented a great impediment. Prithu Prabhu suggested the new aspiring devotee to come with him to Vrindavana, and he lived there for several months, happily practicing Krishna consciousness. When he returned, however, his relatives were ready to challenge him. His aunt, a Catholic nun, preached to him for over two hours, but he did not say a word. When she finally finished, he simply said, “You may have your elaborate philosophy, but because you are eating meat, you will have to suffer.” She protested saying that was complete nonsense and that the Pope eats meat. He repeated the point, “You may say what you like, but because you are eating meat, you will have to suffer. Someday you will remember these words.”

Three or four weeks later newspaper headlines told of the shocking death of a Catholic missionary at the hands of cannibals in the remote country where she was preaching. It was that devotee’s aunt. A fellow sister, watching from the bushes, described how her friend was cooked alive in a kettle, spiced, and devoured by the maneaters for dinner. Apparentally, the Lord wanted to show that His devotee’s words were true, “because you eat meat, you will have to suffer . . . you will remember these words.”

Prithu Prabhu has a book in which he recorded powerful quotations. One that struck me was from Canakya Pandit, “To overpower the world with a single action, restrain your tongue from speaking ill of others.”

Caitanya Candra GGS Prabhu:

Our human form of life will be successful if we know something about Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. How will this happen? Krishna has given us sastra, so we can know what is to done and not to be done. (Bg. 16.24) Sastra includes the four Vedas, Mahabharata, Valmiki’s Ramayana, the 18 Puranas, and the 18 Upapuranas. Sastra, being given by the empowered Vyasa, is free from the four defects of the conditioned soul, (1) tendency to make mistakes, (2) imperfect senses, (3) tendency to be illusioned, and (4) cheating propensities. The Madayadis have no love for Krishna and so cannot give anyone love of Krishna.Gopala-tapani Upanisad mentions Krishna personally, and so He is mentioned in the Vedas. Vedas describe sambhanda, abhideya, and prayojana. But do not hear from the Mayavadi.

Q:What is the Mayavadi philosophy popular in the West and India even today?

A: Because people like to be in illusion. They can do their sense gratification and feel they have some knowledge.

Lord Caitanya wanted to bring all Vaisnavas to the conclusion of acintya-bhedabheda tattva.

Q: Who is preaching Mayavadi?

A: That is not our concern. We are just concerned with Prabhupada and distributing what he has given.

Mahaprabhu Gaura JPS:

Usually fathers desire their sons to become economically prosperous and enjoy sense gratification, however, Lord Rsabhadeva gives completely different instructions—to work for the bare necessities of life only and to be not attached to their homes, relatives, and wealth.

Householders can save valuable funds for devotional activities by buying secondhand items of comparable quality instead of brand new items.

At the zoo, they told us the seal sleeps twenty hours and eats fish for the other four. Some of the other people there thought that would be a very good life.

Jayapataka Swami told there was a study done asking people what they want to be in their next life. The top two choices of the ladies were (1) cats and (2) snakes, while the men chose (1) dogs and (2) horses. Neither wanted to be human beings!

Hare Krishna Prabhu:

We can gratify the senses but not satisfy the senses. Temporarily we diminish the lust by gratifying the senses, like putting gasoline on a fire temporarily reduces the flames, only to have them return in a greater way.

Old age is like a billboard advertising “Death is Coming Soon.”

We are refreshed by a cold shower, although it is painful, and similarly austerity, though painful, cleanses our minds.

George Harrison in an interview published in Rolling Stone, Issue 176, December 19, 1974, available online at

http://www.rollingstone.com/artists/georgeharrison/articles/story/5940028/cover_story_lumbering_in_the_material_world:

“My life belongs to the Lord Krishna and there’s me dog collar to prove it. I'm just a dog and I'm led around by me collar by Krishna. . . . I’m the servant of the servant of the servant of the servant of the servant of Krishna. I’m just a groveling lumberjack lucky to be a grain of dirt in creation. That’s how I feel. Never been so humble in all my life, and I feel great.”

Spring Break Harinamas

Where I Was and What I Was Doing

The first half of March had different nice features. Bhaktin Jena chanted with me on the campus at FSU in Tallahassee, and it was nice to have an assistant there for at least one of the several times I chanted there. A ranting Christian was in a nearby spot, and some people appreciated our more positive presentation. There was another nice First Friday harinama and then a Gaura Purnima Sunday feast program in Tallahassee. The next week was spring break, and I was worried that my program of harinama sankirtana for five days a week would vanish as the Krishna Lunch program I chanted at took a week off, but a lot of great friends helped me keep it going, and I want to tell you about that. Gaura Purnima in Alachua was great with wonderful bhajanas during the abhiseka, especially by Bada Hari Prabhu, and the devotee association and feast were made me very happy. Sveta Svarupa Prabhu was enthusiastic to bathe the Gainesville Gaura Nitai Deities as well, on that occasion, and led some friends on a japa walk to the market to get the required materials. Several devotees also cooked a feast in Gainesville for the Deities lunch. It was wonderful for me to see the spontaneous enthusiasm the Gainesville devotees had to have a nice festival for Lord Gaura on His appearance day.

Spring Break Harinamas

I found that University of North Florida (UNF) at Jacksonville has their spring break the week after UF, so I decided to try to chant there for some time during our break. Bhakta Tim, a great harmonium player and singer, kindly drove me and Sveta Svarupa Prabhu, a natural Bengali bhajana man, to UNF and Bhakta Derek, who is learning the mrdanga and lives in St. Augustine, met us there. We chanted for over two hours. One boy sat down and played the djembe we had brought for a while, enjoying the experience. We always meet nice people there. Prema Sindhu Prabhu’s wife and her friend cooked a very nice lunch for the devotees afterwards at their place in Jacksonville.

On Wednesday, I decided to try Stavapriya Prabhu’s suggestion to try harinama at the Farmer’s Market. Bhaktin Kelly kindly gave us a ride, and we played in a place where we would not interfere with the existing entertainment. The person in charge said he liked our singing, but that it was a little too loud for the vendors, so we toned it down. Some people were appreciative and because it was a positive experience as a whole, we decided to make it a part of our weekly program.

On Thursday, Bhaktin Kelly, who was interviewing people for her paper on Hare Krishna dress, decided she would take me and Sveta to Jacksonville so we could chant again and she could interview people from another location. We chanted again for almost three hours, with Derek as before. Kalakantha Prabhu’s daughter is attending UNF next semester and worries about finding a vegetarian roommate, but in that one day, I spoke to four vegetarian students on the campus! At UNF, we are more a curiosity than UF where they already know who we are and have decided how much we fit into their life, thus more people come up to us when we sing. Prema Sindhu Prabhu’s wife made a great lunch of kitri, with its friends, yogurt and papadam, for our chanting party afterwards.

On Friday, there were the usual Alachua Friday night harinama and our late night Gainesville harinama, and on Saturday was the several hours of chanting at the Tallahassee Rainbow Gathering I mentioned in a previous issue. In addition to the harinamas I attended, Tim and Kelly and their friends went to St. Augustine Beach on Saturday, and they chanted bhajanas for quite sometime as well. On the whole, I felt very victorious that we were able have so much harinama on spring break week, when our usual program was suspended. I felt then, and continue to feel even now, very indebted to all my friends mentioned above for assisting me in my endeavor to follow, at least to an insignificant degree, Lord Caitanya’s instruction to promote the chanting of Hare Krishna in every town and village of this world. I hope they all become very dear to Lord Caitanya as a result of their auspicious activities of assisting His harinama sankirtana mission.

Notes on Mahatma Prabhu’s Japa Seminar

Ideas for good japa:
Chant in a sacred place:
In the temple with devotees who chant softly and intently.
With the Deities

Although we can all list ways we can improve our japa, we do not always practice doing these things. Why not? On some level, we do not care enough. We do not take our relationship with Krishna seriously enough.

Before I chant, I should reflect on why I am chanting—to awaken my relationshp with Krishna.

After I chant, I should reflect on what went well, what went badly, and what can be improved.

Good japa habits are important because habit can work for us against us. Chanting habit improvement begins with awareness of our present habits. Psychologists say it takes thirty days to create a new habit.

“You should listen to every word of the mantra because the chanting is the essence of our philosophy.”

To be successful is easier than to fail, because a successful person is one who tries in the right way.

Chanting is not just a process; it is a relationship. It’s me and Krishna.

The quality of our chanting depends on our feeling, Srila Prabhupada remarks, in commenting on Queen Kunti’s prayers. Feeling is the essence, heart is the essense, relationship is the essence. “Krishna wants me to chant well, so I am going to do it for him.”

Our strategy should be to make excellent japa normal.

Create an internal sacred space, a world where we and the holy name are together, and make a commitment to the holy name.

Insight from Lectures

Hridayananda Dasa Goswami (March 5, 2009):

Srila Prabhupada said that the secret of keeping the devotees enthused is to give them a challenge.

We come to this world to take. By giving back, by performing sacrifice, we make up for this.

At the end of his life, Yudhisthira Maharaja mentally placed the elements of his body back into their original causes.

As conditioned souls we have a tendency to lord it over people, and because the varnasrama system is hierarchical one can easily fall into using one’s social position to exploit others. Because we have divine sanction for hierarchy, one can justify one’s exploitation. Every hierarchy is potentially degrading because of the tendency to lord it over material nature.

Q: I thought that the ksatriyas do not take sannyasa, only the brahmanas.
A: In reality, some ksatriyas retired without their wives and thus were factually sannyasis.

Q: How can you know if you can do more Krishna or if you are doing as much as you can.
A: Try to do more and see if you can maintain healthy body, mind, and soul.

Chalk out a plan on Gaura Purnima for the year.

If your groove becomes too deep, it becomes a rut.

Brahmatirtha Prabhu:

Bhakti Tirtha Swami explained that there are two actions regarding love. One can seek love or one can give love.

In varnasrama, the ksatriyas (members of the administrative class) set the boundaries for the vaisyas (capitalists). The ksatriyas check with the brahmanas (intellectuals and priests) before acting.

The systems of government that are popular there in varnasrama: socialism for the sudras, capitalism for the vaisyas, monarchy for the ksatriyas, and anarchy for the brahmanas.

Kalakantha Prabhu:

Modern governments assume economic development will satisfy people. Money is required, but it is not the key to happiness.

Our neck beads rest nicely on our necks without out scattering because of the thread stringing them together. When we neglect Krishna, who is the thread on which everything rests, chaos results. When Krishna is in the center, everything is in focus. When He is not in the center, for whatever the reason, disorder results.

On voting: Some say by voting that we will be implicated in the law of karma. But in a democracy, if you do not vote, you will also be implicated in the karma of the leaders. Thus it is better to vote and choose the better candidate.

Mother Nanda:

There is no impediment to spiritual progress for one who endeavors sufficiently. Krishna reciprocates with Arjuna because of his devotion and will similarly reciprocate with us. We have to take the trouble to apply what we hear in class to our daily life.

The vastness of the Vedic literature is to reach out to the living entities who are bewildered by such a variety of illusion.

Sometimes in the beginning with think that our relationship is with Krishna and our guru, and everyone else is just in the way.

Arjuna had to struggle with so many things, including his mind, although he was a pure devotee.

Q: How do you help someone in Krishna consciousness who makes the same mistake over and over.
A: Remember (1) Krishna is unlimitedly patient and (2) You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink.

Andres:

In illusion, people think that wealth will make them happy. The United States is the richest nation but the largest consumer of anti-depressant pills.

Kelly:

Kelly was interviewing people for a paper on Hare Krishna dress. She found to her surprise many people in the Gainesville area, especially the older people, respect the devotees for their sincere glorification of God.

Where I Was and What I Was Doing

One eventful experience during the second half of February was going to the Rainbow Gathering in Ocala National Forest to chant and distribute spiritual food. Later, in March, we went to the Rainbow Gathering in Tallahassee, a fairly new, but similar event we had never done before. Although in different months, both are history now, so I will describe them together to compare and contrast them. The second half of February was also special because I heard at least five lectures by Hridayananda Goswami, much more than usual, and I mention his interesting insights. Also younger and newer devotees tell some nice stories and share some nice realizations in this issue.

Harinama and Food Distribution at North Florida’s Regional Rainbow Gatherings

To assist our food distribution at the Ocala Rainbow Gathering, Gainesville’s Krishna Lunch program donated one bucket of rice, one bucket of dal, and one bucket of rice and dal mixed, and most importantly, seven buckets of halava, I favorite among devotees and Rainbows alike. When we found out we had to walk an hour into the woods at Ocala’s National Forest, we realized that we were understaffed to easily transport it all. A very philanthropic man drove us and our equipment over a rugged road to a slightly closer entrance. Some of us had to stand on the back bumper of the truck to fit on board. We had a couple trolleys of limited effectiveness and some of the Rainbows helped us carry the prasadam in. With great endeavor did we get the food to where the people were. We stopped part way to the main circle, at a place where a lot of people were sitting around and distributed almost all the rice and dal, singing kirtana as we did so.

Then we went to the main circle where we distributed all but about two buckets of halava, to the mostly young people who stayed in a circle at sundown to share food around a bonfire. Another bucket we distributed on the way out. At the main circle bonfire Visvambhara, Bhadra Prabhu’s son, who is an excellent kirtana man, sang for two or two and a half hours. Usually, according to Garuda Prabhu, also known as Yogi G. and Soaring Turkey, a seasoned Rainbow Gathering attender who often sets up his own Krishna tent, the Rainbows don’t let the Krishnas chant for more than twenty minutes. Visvambhara and his drum playing friends were such good entertainment for them, they were able to keep going over two hours. Some of the devotees and some of the Rainbows danced around the bonfire. I gave our Gainesville mantra cards and invitations to the most appreciative people. Although most of the people liked our chanting, a few became restless and wanted to hear something else. Since most of the people liked it, we didn’t take the others too seriously, until they became more assertive. I think that next time, we should stop a little sooner, just avoid making some people irate, even if most of the people like it. It is better to leave people desiring more, than to leave people desiring less. In addition to Visvambhara and his Vaishnava youth band, I recall that Maha-kirti Prabhu and Mother Ali Krishna were particularly enthusiastic and played important roles in the event. In particular, Ali Krishna distributed many books to people with a spiritual interest, who have time to read them while camped out there in the woods.

The Tallahassee event was different in many ways. The national forest which hosts it, is just outside the city limits, and thus it is convenient for Tallahassee residents. The main circle is just a ten or fifteen minute walk instead of a whole hour, a welcome relief. We had nine devotees and stayed for the whole afternoon and part of the evening. One difference about this event was that the Rainbows invited us to participate in one of their circles just about to commence when we arrived. Mother Mrgaksi thought it would be good for us from the social point of view to accept their invitation, and as she is senior person and made a good point, I went along with it. The topic of that meeting was how to respond to violence committed by Rainbow’s own front gate staff on the others as they came and left the gathering. One man was clearly responsible and was ultimately the object of some disciplinary action by the others. Each person in the circle could say something which others were allowed to respond to, when they were holding a certain feather, which indicated the right to speak. Many of the points were repetitive, but since each person had a right to speak, that was almost inevitable. When it was my turn, I decided to mention part of our mission there, distribution of spiritual food, and I explained that one effect of eating spiritual food is that it makes one less violent, citing a few practical examples. Bhaktin Jackie spoke nicely, mentioning the beneficial effects of the universal principal of chanting the holy name of the Lord. Some of the devotees left the circle early and did some harinama around the site, a sentiment I could also appreciate. Later one of the Tallahassee Rainbow leaders told a devotee that his appreciation of the Hare Krishnas increased to a new level as a result of their participating in the circle. That was certainly a victory for us.

At the Tallahassee Rainbow event, our chanting party had, in addition to traditional kirtana instruments, two guitars, a ukulele, a djembe drum, and a trumpet, and we played for a few hours along the path leading to the main circle, and a few people joined us to listen or play their own djembe. We distributed prasadam there to those who passed by. I passed out invitations to our campus lunch, yoga, and temple programs to those whose dress indicated they were locals, and would be in the position to attend them. We also distributed books to interested people. I cooked twelve gallons of kitri and five gallons of halava, which I found to take more time and be more physically demanding than I ever imagined, and I gained admiration for those who routinely cook large quantities for prasadam distribution. Daru Brahma Prabhu also donated prasadam from his campus lunch program. We had too much prasadam as this was just the third year of this regional gathering and attendance was not as great as at the other. While I was distributing halava at the main circle, one middle-aged man with his two pre-teen daughters said he had made a lot of halava in his day. I inquired what he meant, and he explained he had been a cook in our Chicago temple in the 1980s named Atmaratha Dasa. I told him about our local temple programs in case he wanted to again pursue the spiritual practice of his youth. As we already chanted for several hours and because we had got some negative feedback from chanting too much at Ocala’s main circle, I was doubtful abut chanting at the main circle at the Tallahassee event, but when some of the people saw us preparing to leave, they asked us to stay and sing. We chanted for twenty minutes or so. It felt better to be asked to sing, rather than to be asked to stop.

Both the Ocala and Tallahassee programs were tiring, as after packing up and walking out to our vehicles, we still had at least a two-hour drive home to Gainesville. We returned between 1:30 and 2:30 a.m. each time, but it was worth it to distribute prasadam, chant Hare Krishna, make new friends, and visit old ones, and many people, including those of us who participated took another step toward Krishna. And so both were very happy experiences, and I am very thankful to all the devotees who participated. In particular, I appreciate Mahakirti Prabhu, a veteran organizer of festival events like the Czech Woodstock, who assisted greatly by contributing his enthusiasm, transportation, and funding to both the programs.

Insight from Lectures

Hridayananda Dasa Goswami:

Hridayananda Goswami (February 15, 2009):

Srila Prabhupada said it is our duty to mold our lives to always think of Krishna. If we realize our life does not facilitate Krishna remembrance, we have to reboot it. Sraddha means not merely to believe God exists but to place one’s faith in God. The temple is meant for making you see Krishna in everything when you walk out the door. Imagine a friend comes to you and is dressed in a different way, and you don’t recognize him. That is what we are doing when we see Krishna in the Deity but not in everyone’s heart.

The “akama sarva-kama” verse means that everyone has the same duty (one-pointed devotional service), and everyone has the same chance.

Krishna is not, thank God, a religious fanatic.

When an ISKCON leader was too severe, Srila Prabhupada said, “They are my disciples, do not break them.”

Hridayananda Dasa Goswami (February 19, 2009):

The name “Dhrtarastra” comes from two words “dhrta” meaning “to hold” and “rastra” which means “kingdom”, and so Dhrtarastra is he who held on to the kingdom.

Formerly when people went to the forest for retirement there were places (ashrams) and people who could instruct them on how to live in the forest and counsel them about their issues regarding leaving their families.

When Pandu died, Dhrtarastra saw it was his chance to get the kingdom, and thus he looked the other way when his son Duryodhana tried to murder the Pandavas. Later Duryodhana practically took control. After that, sometimes Dhrtarastra remembered Pandu and felt bad about supporting his son’s atrocities against Pandu’s sons, the Pandavas. But still he went on with the war.

Yudhisthira recalled Dhrtarastra’s taking care of him and his brothers when they were young and felt Dhrtarastra had paid for his crime of supporting his son’s murder attempts against him and his brothers by losing his hundred sons in the war.

In a society dedicated to sense gratification, old people are a nuisance. But in a society dedicated to wisdom, old people are a great asset and should be taken care of and respected.

Hridayananda Dasa Goswami’s japa talk (February 21, 2009):

We want sat, cit, and ananda. In other words, we want to continue to exist, we want to understand, and we want to be happy.

In our relationship with Krishna, our self-centeredness is a problem for us.

In this world, we idolize people to fan our own fantasies.

We have to make a conscious decision to approach Krishna and do what is required.

I like to take long japa walks and practice seeing Krishna everywhere. We actually live in Krishna and should be looking for Him everywhere, like the Six Goswami’s taught. Every living body is a mandira (temple). We go to the mandira, so we can learn to see that when we go outside there are mandiras everywhere.

Japa is an opportunity to hang out with Krishna. Krishna is a really nice guy, in addition to being God.

We do not give our whole heart to Krishna because part of our heart is not quite sure about it yet.

Krishna is His name, so we have immediate access to omnipotence.

The perfection of Srila Prabhupada is not in terms of knowledge of the material world but in terms of knowledge of the spiritual world and how to attain it. In time, Srila Prabhupada was increasing his knowledge of the material world, such as the modern Western technology with which he was originally unfamiliar. Prabhupada expressed many times his perfection was he represented the scripture as it is. Srila Prabhupada created a gurukula system, yet he had never set up a school before. Basically he wanted to facilitate the spiritual life of the children and facilitate the parents of the children to have time to work for the benefit of others. Although there were problems, still his motives were pure, and we should honor his pure desires. He tried different strategies and learned as he went along.

Hridayananda Dasa Goswami (February 26, 2009):

To torture your own children forever for mental crimes (doctrinal mistakes) as some religions characterize God as doing is most evil.

If all you knew were the religions of Asia, would you consider religion the cause of war?

In Bhagavad-gita 12.3, Krishna acknowledges those who work for the welfare of others.

We are not stuck with a jealous God who has self-esteem issues.

To those who are vegetarian and for animal rights, we ask, “Why not add gratitude to the person who has given you everything to your good qualities?”

Some people who give charity out of pride do not like God.

The central component of goodness is devotion to God. For those who want to understand God, to be open-minded about it, is a very important qualification. Because there is only one God, we should be willing to consider information from other sources, especially a culture with so much knowledge and devotion to God for thousands of years, like the Vedic culture. There is nothing like Vaishavism in terms of sophisticated philosophy. It is really unique, and a serious person should consider it.

You cannot give something you do not have. Srila Prabhupada empowered his disciples to give Krishna consciousness to others. He encouraged them: “Do something practical.” “Krishna consciousness is common sense.” When Srila Prabhupada would go somewhere [mentally], he would take you there.

Q: What is the biggest misconception we have of Srila Prabhupada?
A: The guru does not want to take anything from us. He just wants to give us love of God. He had no attachment to anything of this world. He saw the devotees were bright-faced because they were happy sharing Krishna consciousness with others.

Q: How can we attract people?
A: We are not trying to attract people. We are trying to attract Krishna.

Hridayananda Dasa Goswami (February 27, 2009):

Because we have taken up Krishna consciousness based on our previous practice, we enter at different levels.

Some people think that a perfect person has stripped away all personal tendencies, but fortunately that is not our philosophy. It would be very weird to hang around with denatured people.

On a morning walk in Los Angeles, a devotee told Srila Prabhupada that in Israel, the government is criticizing the rabbis for praying all day. Srila Prabhupada replied, “Why do they pray all day? They should do something practical.”

Srila Prabhupada considered that ignorance is to some extent an excuse.

The sincerity of the devotee is the extent to which he struggles with his conditioned nature and tries to surrender to Krishna.

If we represent Srila Prabhupada’s heaviness and not his compassion, then we are not really representing Srila Prabhupada.

Srila Prabhupada was not really against science but against scientism and pseudoscience.

People who oppose me are either:

(1) Reasonable and I learn from them and refine my position. (2) Emphasing the opposite side but serving a valuable role in that they keep people from taking my side to an extreme. (3) Crazy.

Plato says that when you come out of the cave into the brightness of the sun, because you are used to the dim light of the cave, you stumble about and are less functional for a while.

Srila Prabhupada personally told me that there was no time that he did not remember Krishna, and I have no doubt that he was telling the truth, and that he came from the spiritual world.

Adi Karta Prabhu:

The only real enjoyment for the soul is love of God. Persons who attain this give up the pursuit of physical knowledge.

Krishna appeared as a cowherd boy to show us the importance of the cow to human society.

Mother Akuti:

We should not wait to the end of life to take spiritual life seriously, as Dhrtarastra did.

Srila Prabhupada was addicted to Krishna and was hoping we would become addicted to Krishna.

Bhakti can be attained with the help of someone like Vidura who sticks with you till the end.

Gandhari, because of her austerity, was powerful enough to reprimand all the great Kaurava leaders like Bhismadeva and Dronacarya, although no one else could do so, when these leaders callously permitted the insulting of Draupadi.

A book distributor once asked Srila Prabhupada how he could be unaffected by dealing with all the materialistic habits of the people he approached on book distribution. Srila Prabhupada advised him to chant all sixteen rounds in the morning in one sitting.

Kalakantha Prabhu:

If we see bad things done to us as our karma, then we can forgive the offender.

Srila Prabhupada said, “We must learn how to forgive and forget, otherwise how can we live.”

Srila Prabhupada once said a class should contain four important ideas: (1) we are not these bodies, but spiritual souls, (2) the mission of Lord Caitanya is to spread love of Godhead worldwide, (3) chanting the holy name is best way to approach God, and (4) the personal feature of God is superior to His impersonal feature and is the desired goal.

Phanibhusana Prabhu on The Nectar of Devotion:

Offer Krishna forest flowers not florists’ flowers!

The term “His Divine Grace” referring to the spiritual master can be explained with the “His” referring to Krishna because the guru is the ‘divine grace’ of Krishna.

On surrender:
I will go where you want me to go.
I will do whatever you want me to do.
I will say whatever you want me to say.
I will stay wherever you want to stay.

Mother Indrani:

Yudhisthira Maharaja teaches us to inquire when we in distress and thus be relieved, just as he inquired from Sanjaya and Narada Muni.

“If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.”

When Arjuna is depressed because he doesn’t want to fight and turns to Krishna, Krishna smiles. Similarly Krishna is smiling when we turn to Him.

Q: You can get angry at God for sending you bad things. How to avoid this?
A: On a bad day, we see it as Krishna’s plan. We ask Krishna, “What are we to learn from this?” He will show you.

Q: How do you make plans if you know that Krishna may not accept your plans?
A: Just to live we have to make plans, but we can seek guidance and observe our motives. Is it to help others? Is it to please Krishna?

I wanted to go to Bhakti Tirtha Swami’s samadhi opening in Mayapur, and I made so many plans, but due to some physical aliment I couldn’t go. Then I had to surrender to the fact that Krishna did not want me to go. I had to pray to be able to accept it.

Bhakti Tirtha Swami said, “The mind puts up a wall for the soul to express itself. The mind, by its very nature, can only accept and reject the subject matter of the material world.”

Mother Ali Krishna:

Krishna consciousness is all auspicious because it: (1) attracts everyone, (2) benefits everyone, (3) liberates everyone, and (4) brings happiness to everyone.

Just like when you are a kid and you really want a tricycle for your seventh birthday, you cry to express the intensity of your desire, in the same way, we should cry to be engaged in some kind of devotional service to Krishna.

Our situation in his world is like someone who comes out of a coma and has amnesia and cannot recognize his dearmost relatives. In the same way, we cannot recognize our beloved Lord until we come out of amnesia by the process of devotional service.

Mother Namamrita:

When I was younger, when my mom went to dress the Deities, sometimes I felt remorseful, thinking I was being neglected, but now I can understand and appreciate the value of her service and her greatness.

Conversations with Others About Spirituality

Murti Dasa, an enthusiastic, young book distributor, decided to experiment by doing book distribution in varieties of attire. He tried wearing, on three different days, (1) a suit and tie, (2) ripped jeans, and (3) Hare Krishna brahmacari robes. His conclusion was that dress had an insignificant effect on the number of books he distributed. He suggested that one dress in whatever one feels comfortable in, but then added that acting for our own comfort may be yet another attachment to overcome on the path to pure love for Krishna.

Andres, one of the IVS students, told us that when he was becoming interested in Krishna consciousness, he was at a party of his friends, both those also inclined to devotional service and those not. The nondevotee friends all got intoxicated while his devotionally inclined friends remained sober. One by one the intoxicated friends passed out. Then the devotee friends had kirtana for half an hour, enjoying the spiritual intoxication of the chanting. His other friends were trying to enjoy life by getting intoxicated but in reality, they just passed out. However, his devotee friends, who did not take intoxication, were happily intoxicated chanting Hare Krishna.

Gemini told how he became vegetarian when he was tripping on acid and saw a TV show with a man jogging, along with his dog and his turkey, who were also jogging. He then understood the turkey was also a living thing, and became a vegetarian that very day, throwing out all the meat in his residence. His commitment was tested later when he was hitchhiking and a Muslim man offered him a ride. The Muslim man was going to a wedding, and made Gemini the guest of honor. As the honored guest, he was given the first plate of lamb at the wedding banquet. Gemini was worried. He did not want to offend the hosts nor break his vow of vegetarianism. Thus he told the wedding assembly that he had heard of Allah’s kindness to all, and it moved him to become vegetarian. They all applauded. Two weeks later, the bridegroom wrote Gemini that he had become inspired by Allah to become vegetarian too.

“In distributing love of Godhead, Caitanya Mahaprabhu and His associates did not consider who was a fit candidate and who was not, nor where such distribution should or should not take place. They made no conditions. Wherever they got the opportunity, the members of the Pañca-tattva distributed love of Godhead.” (Sri Caitanya-cartamrita, Adi-lila 7.23)
